Mutare – Three illegal diamond dealers were on Wednesday trapped to death in a mine shaft while mining diamonds illegally.
Two of the now deceased were brothers, Washington (35) and Gladmore Simango (31) and the other who remains unidentified were trapped in a mining shaft at the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) mining portals.
Members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Mutare on Friday failed to confirm the deaths as they had not received reports of the incident.
However, a Simango family member identified as Galio who is an elder brother to the now deceased confirmed the deaths.
Speaking to the Zim Morning Post on Friday, Galio confirmed that his brothers bodies were in a mortuary at the Mutare Provincial hospital.
“We are very saddened about the deaths. I have lost my two brothers,” he said.
“On Wednesday night when l was at Arda Transau shops, l received a message to the effect that my brothers had been trapped in a mine. I rushed home to inform my wife of the incident but she was already up to date,” said Simango.
He said one of the persons who had escaped from the trap had alerted locals of the incident.
“We went to the mine shaft where the bodies were discovered and a police report was made. The bodies were then taken to the mortuary,” lamented Simango.
