Mugabe Funeral: Mystery as family changes casket

Mystery surrounds the former late President Robert Mugabe’s funeral amid reports that the family has changed the casket that was paraded at Rufaro and National Sports Stadium since Thursday last week.

Mugabe died last Friday in Singapore and his body was repatriated to Zimbabwe on Wednesday last week.

The body arrived in a wooden casket and it lied in state at Rufaro and National Sports Stadium from Thursday to Saturday.

On Sunday the Mugabe family postponed the Zvimba funeral wake after reports that the former first lady Grace Mugabe was sick.

When the body was finally taken to Mugabe’s rural home mourners were shocked to discover that the casket has been changed.

That is not the casket that we saw on Saturday at the National Sports Stadium,” said one of the mourners.

This is something we have never seen. How can a coffin be changed. There must be something happening.

This also feeds into reports that the family want to have a private function when they finally bury the former president.”

Superstition, traditional beliefs and rituals have become permanent features rocking Mugabe’s funeral.

Chiefs want him to be buried without the knowledge of the public as per tradition while others are saying there are rituals that have to be done before the long time ruler is buried.

What will happen to the casket that was bought in Singapore,” said another mourner.

This is shocking. Are we sure we are going to bury the real Robert Mugabe or there are some tricks being played by the family.”

However, investigations by the Zim Morning Post revealed that Doves Funeral Palour provided another casket to the Mugabe family.

Doves provided a 20-gauge-copper casket which lasts longer than a wooden one.

“The Mugabes were supposed to take the casket to Singapore but had opted to purchase another one there,” the source said.

“Upon the arrival of the body the family had suggested to use the same casket from Singapore but after some changes with regards to burial arrangements they then opted to change it.
