Mnangagwa first African leader to congratulate US President-Elect Joe Biden

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has sent his congratulations to the new President of the United States following confirmation that Pennsylvania had voted Democrat and delivered enough electoral college votes to get Joe Biden over the 270 magic number.

In a tweet sent just minutes after the news emerged, Mnangagwa said:

“On behalf of all Zimbabweans, a huge congratulations to President-Elect Joe Biden on his election victory.

Zimbabwe wishes you every successes in leading the American people. I look forward to working with you to increase cooperation between our two nations.”

It is generally hoped that Joe Biden will take a less isolationist approach to the White House.

The change in government could pose a new opportunity for Zimbabwe in the country’s efforts to reengage with the international community.

U.S. sanctions continue to have a significant impact on Zimbabwe’s economy. Despite efforts since 2018 to reform the economy, resolve issues related to land reform and to tackle corruption, the Trump administration maintained its sanctions approach, which as the UN noted negatively impacts all Zimbabweans.
