A Mbare-based Mabhero smuggler is on the run following a Sunday blitz that saw police confiscate 353 smuggled bales of clothes from Block 6 Magaba, Mbare in Harare .
The bales were under the custody of Kudakwashe Chiyaka and Simbarashe Kasawaya, police said in a statement on Monday.
“The bales will be handed over to ZIMRA while efforts to locate Zvidzai Hove, believed to be responsible for the bales are underway,” police said in a statement.
The incident comes after police in April intercepted three truckloads of second hand clothes along the Harare-Mutare highway and arrested the drivers concerned.
The trucks were intercepted near Dombotombo turn off in Marondera after police received a tip-off that there were trucks carrying second hand clothes suspected to have been smuggled.
The smuggled second hand bales were in excess of 400. In late October, police intercepted two trucks laden with 418 bales of second-hand clothes and shoes at Tanganda Business Centre, Chipinge.
Upon being flagged to stop by Police Officers, the drivers of the trucks parked their vehicles and fled.
One of the drivers later turned up at Mutare Police Station claiming ownership of one vehicle and was arrested.
On Monday, police said “criminals involved in smuggling activities” would face the full wrath of the law for fleecing the nation of important revenue.
