HARARE – Tragedy struck the Castle Tankard on Saturday night after a stampede erupted at the end of Winky D’s musical performance at Borrowdale Race Course in Harare.
Two people died and several people were injured as the crowd headed for the exit at around 10 pm.
Revellers threw cans on stage and had appeared to have been angered after police officers stormed the stage and stopped Winky D’s performance.
The deceased have been identified as Thomas Maari (43) and Emilia Makoga (44) both of Hatcliff in Harare.
Police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said investigations are still underway and have encouraged the organisers of big social events to limit their numbers in order to avoid such unfortunate scenarios.
The organisers of the Castle Tankard and Mashonaland Turf Club expressed sadness at the fatalities and injuries and passed condolences to bereaved families.
The country’s oldest and biggest horse racing event had been off the books in the last two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
