We are not moved says Fadzayi Mahere
Zanu PF say advantage Mnangagwa
A name popularised by the Nelson Chamisa led formation and buttressed by the opposition movement’s supporters has been registered with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) under a little-known political party, a move which has been immediately celebrated by Zanu PF officials as an advantage to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
In what opposition players described as a Zanu PF boomerang, the development shortens the list of options for the Nelson Chamisa’s movement which is now racing against time to register a name ahead of the 2023 elections.
MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora says his party is the only legitimate owner and rights holder to the name MDC (Movement for Democratic Change) first used in 1999.
The Chamisa led-party, however, insists they are unmoved by the move set in motion by a new political party called Citizens Convergence for Change (CCC) which registered into existence on Monday.
“We haven’t changed our name. We are the MDC Alliance. Should there be any changes, they will be communicated using official channels,” party spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere told Zim Morning Post, when reached for comment regards the CCC name registration.
Chamisa’s formation popularised the name on various social and traditional media messaging, calling for unity among progessive forces as the Citizens Convergence Programme.
The Citizens Convergence Programme highlighted in the party’s smart Agenda 2021, is an initiative calling for unity among alternative voices in the country.
Mahere said the development does not change or affect the Chamisa led formation’s agenda.
“As highlighted in our Agenda 2021, we urge citizens to register to vote en masse. The people know their leaders. The citizens are coming together in a broad alliance to win Zimbabwe for change under the able leadership of the people’s President, Adv Nelson Chamisa,” she added.
Mahere has previously said “we can call the MDC Alliance the Anything Party, Peace Party or whatever it is, but people know who we are, and there is no confusion in the minds of the people on who the legitimate opposition is.”
In a letter addressed ZEC on Monday, the new party’s Secretary-General, Farai Zhou unveiled the party’s leader, Varaidzo Musungo as their 2023 presidential candidate.
“We can confirm that our Party’s President and 2023 Presidential Candidate is Ms Varaidzo Musungo. Our party logo as appears at the top and bottom of this letter,” said Zhou.
“In the interests of better communication, we are sourcing offices in Harare and will advise once we have these,” Zhou added.
Government spokesperson George Charamba immediately salivated in the moment, signing off his post on twitter with the message #EDTheGameChanger!
